Week 5

It was a very busy week, because I had to do my final illustrations and formatting. It took me longer to do the final illustrations than I thought it would.

Final illustration

It was difficult to balance the colours because of the complementary colour relationship between orange and purple. Originally, we planned to use a thick, heavy purple fabric. However, the purple colour became too strong and broke the harmony of the whole illustration, so I decided to use purple for the fabric pattern and organdy.

I also used several shades of grey to keep the colour scheme simple but not boring. Neutral tones such as grey, beige and white can create a simple yet elegant style if I am conscious of different tones and colour schemes. I have always loved Parisian outfits, and when I analysed the styles that I like, I realised that they are composed of neutral tones. At this time, the use of orange made the look more casual than I had imagined. The striped pattern also made the designs a casual look. As well as the colour, the pattern also has a big influence on the style, which I would like to study more. I would also like to find my favourite pattern.

Formatting

I tried to create a clean, easy-to-read organised portfolio for the viewer. Also, Karen told us that fewer words are good for portfolios, so I reduced the number of words as much as possible and only included the minimum amount of information and words that I wanted to convey. I feel that my formatting skills have improved compared to my early in this course. I believe that attractiveness is an important part of a designer’s skill, so I want to continue to learn and look at different magazines and brochures to develop these skills.

Adobe Class

Honestly, I didn’t like using Adobes because the application is complicated for me and it’s not easier to create than Procreate. Also, I’m not good at using a computer, so I felt nervous to take the classes. However, As I learnt about Adobes, I discovered the usefulness of the functions they have. Espasially, the fanction of creating 3D drawing was amazing, and there is no it in Procreate. Mastering Adobe is still hard for me, but if I could master it, I think the range of designs I could express would be much wider. I would like to learn more about Adobe by taking Adobe courses held in Japan in the future, with the first goal being to like Adobe.

Evaluation

When I started this course, I thought that LCF was the fashion version of a business school where I studied design for business. Also, I believed that the course gave me knowledge of ethical fashion that I was interested in. I have felt that I wanted to change the fashion industry to be gentle to the earth, and my agent recommended me this course.

The things I enjoyed in this course were communicating with my friends who have different backgrounds and facing myself to learn more about myself. Also, it was fun to travel around London after classes.

The things I have learned over the course were how to look for lines from research and development to design. Before coming to this course, I had not experienced learning to draw and design, so I was confused about understanding how to design early. Also, my English skills were not enough, so I struggled to understand lectures. Honestly, I did not understand well how to develop ideas until the middle of term2, but I could understand it because Carlyn demonstrated it to me. I’m glad to become able to look for original lines. Moreover, I learned about myself during the course. I was a superficial person before moving to London because I was afraid to show my individuality and wanted to be an ordinary person to blend in with Japanese society. However, during this course, I have faced myself and asked myself many questions. As a result, I learned about myself better, and I’m happy more than before.

In term 3, unfortunately, I am not satisfied with my outcome. The amount of physical drawing and improving ideas were not enough. I followed and kept planning until handing it in because I was a slow person to work but had to finish my project in time. As a result, I filled my mind with the plan, so I thought I missed a lot of small but interesting ideas. My final illustration was higher quality than term 1 and 2. I understand that my drawing is stiff, and there are some 3-dimensional inconsistencies, but my drawing skill has definitely improved. I have learned to draw 3-dimensionality from drawing architecture in term 2, and I believe that the skill has been put to good use for term 3. I will improve my development of idea skills and look for an interesting and beautiful silhouette. For that, I want to improve my observing skills closely.

If I could change my project in term 3, I would have looked for lines more. This is because it is clear that my development of ideas was not enough, and I feel that I could find more interesting lines. Also, I want to do 3D work again because I did not show my potential. I regard that drawings of research were less, so I would draw more.

Overall, I am happy with my term3 portfolio. The happiest thing is that I learned about the atomic bomb and had a chance to think about peace. If I did not have this project, the atomic bomb would have been just a trauma that I would not want to remember for me.

I have started that I did not know anything about designing in this course, and I’m in the middle of understanding how to do that now. It was hard to study fashion design for me, who had not learned how to draw and design and had low English skills. But I could get through this course. I’m proud of myself. Also, I have understood myself better and realised things I want to do. The biggest achievement is that I have become more myself throughout the year.
